1.Introduction: The Ethiopian Medical Laboratory Association (EMLA) is one of the oldest professional associations in Ethiopia, registered with the Ministry of Justice in 1964, and re- registered by the Ethiopian Government Law of Charities and Society Proclamation No. 621.2009. Our mission is to promote policies, programs and technologies which assure continuous improvement in the quality of laboratory education, practices, and research, and health outcomes. As such, it has a range of roles that include; national standard setting and promoting science, supporting its members through scientific and educational endeavor, and providing a series of trainings, conferences and focused mentorship in order for laboratory medicine to meet standard requirements in the country.

The General Assembly is the highest decision making body with the responsibility of providing an overall direction and policy framework. Executive board, who are elected by general assembly, will give guidance to the executive director and serve for four years. The office of the executive director is the responsible organ for operational management and leadership, and executes day to day activities of the association with regional chapter focal persons, the executive secretary and accountant.

EMLA has an active participation in different activities with Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health, and their subsidiary agencies. The association is also Member of the Ethiopian Health Professionals council at the Ministry of Health (FMOH) which is responsible for advising the ministry on matters related to the overall health policy, health professional trainings, professional licensing and accreditation of medical laboratories.
